Bobby Schindler: Defending the Dignity of the Disabled and Medically Vulnerable
In 2005, 26 year old Terri Schiavo experienced an unexplained collapse, while at home alone with her husband, leaving her mentally and physically handicapped. After a short period of time, her husband lost interest in caring for her and took legal action to withhold basic medical care, even though she was not dying and was not suffering from a life threatening disease. We will hear her brother Bobby share Terri’s story, a story that compels us to consider deeper questions on the dignity and value of life, especially when a person becomes disabled.

Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network
The Terri Schiavo Hope and Life Network was founded to uphold human dignity by serving “medically vulnerable persons at risk of being marginalized rather than supported in love.” They do this by advocating for the “essential qualities of human dignity – which include the right to food and water, the presumption of the will to live, due process against denial of care, protection from euthanasia as a form of medicine, and access to rehabilitative care—as well as through 24/7 Crisis Lifeline service to at-risk patients and families.” For more information, visit their website at www.LifeAndHope.com
Position of the National Catholic Bioethics Center on Nutrition and Hydration
The National Catholic Bioethics Center has thoroughly explained its position on the administration of food and water to medically vulnerable individuals. You can read their full position and explanation here.
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services
“The purpose of these Ethical and Religious Directives then is twofold: first, to reaffirm the ethical standards of behavior in health care that flow from the Church’s teaching about the dignity of the human person; second, to provide authoritative guidance on certain moral issues that face Catholic health care today.” You can read more here.
We are continuously working to make our program better! We greatly value your feedback.
